Dixie Square Mall

Dixie square mall, like most major urbex sites, is a reflection of the area's economy. It devolved from an ambitious, successful indoor shopping center in 1966, to a crime-ridden, money pit with almost zero occupancy in 1978. Only two stores remained in 1979. 1979 was also the year that the mall was used as a set for "The Blues Brothers" – when Jake and Elwood eluded numerous police vehicles and trashed much of the mall. Like the mall itself, various plans were proposed and abandoned, and the mall was left to slowly decay. It was partially demolished (illegally). One building was accidentally demolished instead of renovated. Huge amounts of Asbestos was discovered. The mall went into red-tape limbo. Finally in Feb. of 2012, final demolition began.

In July of 2011 I visited the mall and shot numerous photos and these 360 interactive images. We only had a couple of hours and planned to return in 2012. :-(
